Poland has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following the intrusion of Russian drones into its airspace.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, the Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed the request but did not specify when the meeting would take place.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told Polish radio that Poland wanted to “draw the attention of the whole world to this unprecedented attack by Russian drones on a member state not only of the UN,”

“But also, of the European Union and NATO.”

According to Warsaw, 19 drones entered Polish airspace overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday during a Russian airstrike on Ukraine. Some were intercepted and brought down by Polish and Dutch fighter jets.

The incident marks the first time Russian drones have been shot down over NATO territory, potentially signalling a significant escalation in the West’s response to Russian military activity.

Russia has denied responsibility, with its Defence Ministry stating on Telegram that “there were no plans to target infrastructure in Poland.”

Sikorski, however, dismissed the denial, saying: “Nineteen violations of Polish airspace in a coordinated seven-hour operation cannot be a coincidence. This is a military and political test, not only for Poland, but for NATO as a whole.”

As one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia holds veto power and can block any formal condemnation of its actions.
