Officers of the Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday attacked residents protesting at the Lagos State House of Assembly against ongoing demolitions in Oworonshoki, Makoko, and Owode Onirin areas of the state.

The residents led by protesters including members of pro-human and civil rights group — Take It Back movement, stormed the assembly on Wednesday.

They urged the government to halt the demolitions, compensate the homeowners and families whose relatives were killed or injured during the exercise.

However, few hours into the protest, police officers fired teargas canisters at the demonstrators, injuring some, arresting others and dispersing the procession.

Hassan Taiwo popularly known as Soweto, was arrested during the protest alongside other protesters, Jamiu Towolawi, a member of the Take It Back movement who co-led the protest told The Peoples Gazette on Wednesday.

Contacted, the Lagos State police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, did not respond to an inquiry by The Gazette on the issue.

Phone calls and text messages sent to her mobile were not answered as of press time this story was filed.

The Lagos State Government on September 6, 2025, commenced removal of unapproved buildings along Lekki and Iyana Oworosonki coastal lines, and on December 23, 2025, resumed demolition of llegal structures by using excavators to destroy buildings in Makoko, rendering many homeless.
