Police issue red alert for Lagos metropolis as fallout rages over naira scarcity

The Lagos Police Command on Friday ordered its officers to remain at alert and respond to any unrest that may again arise from the nationwide naira scarcity.
Idowu Owohunwa, commissioner of Police in Lagos, ordered police officers to “be on standby with effect from today Friday 17/02/2023 till further notice.
“CONFINEMENT TO BARRACKS: The Commissioner of Police Lagos State has directed that all officers and men should be on standby with effect from today Friday 17/02/2023 till further notice,” the Commander of Area “B”, Apapa-Lagos, Rotimi Agunloye said in a memo issued on Friday.
“Any disobedience to this directive will attract severe punishment. You have been warned.”
When contacted for comments, Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos did not immediately respond to Peoples Gazette request.
Earlier today, riots broke out in some communities in Lagos, notably Mile 12, Iyana-Iba, Ojota, Agege and Ikorodu.
Police officers were deployed to douse the riot’s caused due to the rejection of old naira notes in Mile 12 market.
