The police in Zamfara State have killed three suspected bandits and recovered AK-47 rifles and 23 rounds of live ammunition during an operation in Taza, Wuya, and Gwaram villages within the Jangebe Forest axis of Anka Local Government Area.

According to a statement on Monday by the police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, a joint security team launched offensive operations at about 6:00 a.m. on June 7, 2026, targeting forests and remote locations used as bandit hideouts.

“Upon arrival at the targeted locations, the team encountered heavily armed bandits who engaged the operatives with sophisticated weapons. A fierce gun battle ensued, during which the security team successfully overpowered the criminals,” he said.

Mr Abubakar said three bandits were killed, while several others escaped into the forest with suspected gunshot wounds.

“One suspect was arrested. Recovered exhibits include three AK-47 rifles, twenty-three rounds of live ammunition, three magazines, and ten motorcycles,” he said.

He added that no casualties were recorded among the police operatives and other security personnel involved in the operation.

According to him, the operation was particularly significant as it marked the first security incursion and direct engagement against bandits within that axis of the Jangebe Forest, an area previously regarded as a stronghold of criminal elements.
