PRP calls for caution on state police, national security overhaul

It cautioned that the proposed transition to a state police structure required more careful deliberation.

The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has expressed reservations over the ongoing push to establish state police through a constitutional amendment.

The party made this known in a statement signed by its national chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, on Thursday in Abuja.

The party acknowledged the national consensus that Nigeria’s security architecture required a significant overhaul to address common threats.

However, it cautioned that the proposed transition to a state police structure required more careful deliberation.

The PRP said it believed that, since Nigeria needed a major review of its security and law enforcement institutions, there were broader considerations to address.

The party advised the federal government to focus on ensuring the success of the upcoming electoral processes.

It stressed the need for the government to maintain high standards of credibility and public trust before finalising on such a major constitutional change.

It also encouraged the current administration to prioritise immediate, practical measures to stabilise the security situation and protect citizens from ongoing threats.

“The forthcoming election should be a threshold which should be crossed with credibility and popular acclaim before the nation decides on important issues such as state police structures,” the party said.

It called for a more measured approach to ensure the new system’s sustainability and integrity.

“Going by precedent and records, this administration will almost certainly secure what is needed to amend the constitution and actualise its desire to establish state police, but there are more to this move,” the party added.
