The Police Service Commission (PSC) has appointed Banji Lawal as a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) to represent the South-West geopolitical zone in the force management team.

PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

He said Mr Lawal took over from Sylvester Alabi, the DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department that represented the zone and retired on December 31.

The PSC spokesman said Mr Lawal was the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of border patrol at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, before the appointment.

Mr Ani said the new DIG was a commandant at the Police Training College, Ikeja, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations,  Ekiti, Abia and Edo.

He said Mr Lawal had appeared before the commission in plenary at its extraordinary meeting.

Mr Ani said the new DIG went through written and oral examinations, in which he particularly commended the community policing programme of the Nigeria Police Force.

He said the chairman of PSC, Hashimu Argungu, congratulated the new DIG on his elevation and urged him to make himself relevant in the police management team.
