Real Madrid emerge La Liga champions following Barcelona’s 4-2 loss to Girona

Real Madrid have clinched the 2023/24 Spanish La Liga title after Girona helped the Los Blancos to their 36th league silverware with four matches to spare by beating Barcelona 4-2 on Saturday evening.
The Los Blancos had Thursday thrashed Cadiz 3-0 at the Bernabeu but needed Girona to upset Barcelona in the evening, which the Gironistes pulled off impressively to send Real Madrid into celebratory mode.
Barcelona’s defeat allowed Real Madrid to move 14 points ahead of them with only four matches left, which can only produce a maximum of 12 points — the Catalans would still be two points short if the Los Blancos were to lose their remaining games.
Two goals were scored in the first four minutes of the game. Andreas Christensen put Barcelona ahead in the third minute before Artem Dovbyk equalised for Girona 60 seconds later.
However, Robert Lewandowski restored Barcelona’s lead in the 45th minute from the spot. In the 65th minute, Christian Portu made it 2-2 before Miguel Gutierrez put Girona ahead for the first time in the game two minutes later.
In the 74th minute, Portu scored his brace of the evening to seal the win for the hosts, sending Girona to second place on the league table with one point ahead of Barcelona as they hope to secure Champions League qualification.
