Rivers electoral commission fixes October 5 for LG polls
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that the state’s local government will be conducted on October 5.
RSIEC announced this at a meeting with political party leaders on its premises on Monday in Port Harcourt.
The commission also unveiled its timetable and guidelines for the upcoming polls.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara had, on June 18, this year, replaced 23 outgoing LG chairs whose tenure expired on June 17 with a caretaker committee to maintain the position pending the conduct of polls.
The chairman and chief electoral commissioner of RSIEC, Adolphus Enebeli, in a notice dated June 19, announced the fixing of the stakeholders’ meeting for July 1, 2024.
The outgone chairmen, who are said to be loyalists of the immediate past governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had vowed not to vacate the councils because the Law No 2 enacted by the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly extended their tenure by six months, leading to crises in the LGs.
The Rivers Division of the Federal High Court is yet to give its final judgment on the matter.
