The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has called on the federal government to establish a specialised Bank of Transportation to provide financial support for operators across the sector.

The national president of RTEAN, Musa Maitakobi, made the call in a communique on Thursday in Abuja.

”We are writing to the government for the government to consider establishing a bank of transportation like the Bank of Industry and Bank of Agriculture,” said Mr Maitakobi.

Mr Maitakobi, who described the transportation sector as a strategic pillar of national development, said the ongoing economic and infrastructural reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration had repositioned the sector.

He emphasised that the sector required a dedicated financial institution to enable operators to access affordable credit facilities for fleet renewal, infrastructure development, safety improvements, and sectoral expansion.

”Transportation cuts across land, sea and air. The sector needs a structured financial institution that understands its peculiarities and can provide the necessary support for sustainable growth.

”So we are demanding the federal government to look at our demand for them to consider to give us a bank of transport,” Mr Maitakobi said.

He declared the association’s support for Mr Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election, adding that the endorsement was necessitated by the achievements of his administration.

Mr Maitakobi said the present government’s reform efforts emphasised structure, coordination, accountability and long-term planning.

He further called on the members of the association across the country to begin mobilisation in support of Mr Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
