Salah claims historic third PFA’s best player award; Caldentey, Smith, Morgan shine

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah makes history by winning the ‘PFA Player of the Year’ award for a record third time, with Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey named women’s player of the year, while Olivia Smith and Morgan collected the Young Player honours.
The recipients of the 2025 Professional Footballers’ Association awards were announced on Tuesday, August 19.
The ‘Egyptian King’, who guided Liverpool to their 20th league title, has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association Men’s Player of the Year after an incredible season in which he finished as the league’s top scorer with 29 goals and 18 assists.
Salah now stands as the most decorated player in the award’s history, claiming the honour for a record third time after previous wins in 2017–18 and 2021–22, before his latest triumph in the 2024–25 campaign.
The forward joined other top contenders in England’s top flight, including Reds teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Chelsea forward Cole Palmer, and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.
The 33-year-old also won the 2024-25 Premier League player of the season award and was named the Football Writers’ Association footballer of the year.
Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association women’s player of the year.
The Spanish International made 41 appearances, registering 19 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions in her first season after joining Spanish giants Barcelona, and was awarded WSL player of the year in May, and also lifted the Women’s Champions League trophy against her former side.
Behind for the accolade were teammate Alessia Russo, Manchester City’s Mary Fowler and Yui Hasegawa, Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert, and Manchester United’s Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers was named the ‘PFA Young Player of the Year’, being the fifth Villa representative to be named young player of the season.
After a tremendous season, the 23-year-old featured in 54 appearances to help Unai Emery’s side reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the FA Cup, and scored 14 goals with 15 assists, contributing 29 goal contributions.
Twenty-one-year-old Olivia Smith was named the women’s ‘PFA Young Player of the Year’, who joined the Gunners after a record-breaking move in women’s football from Liverpool in July. Other contenders who were nominated include Aggie Beever-Jones, Maika Hamano, Weikie Kaptein, Grace Clinton, and Mary Fowler.
Former England manager Gareth Southgate is the 2025 recipient of the PFA merit award for his contributions to football and achievements with the national side. He became the fifth former England manager to receive the award since its creation in 1974.
Across his eight-year spell from 2016 to 2024, Southgate led the Three Lions to four major tournaments, including finals at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, and a World Cup semi-final in 2018.
USA manager Emma Hayes received the PFA Merit Award for her impact on women’s football after 12 years at Chelsea, where she won 16 trophies, including seven WSL titles and five FA Cups. A six-time WSL Manager of the Season and two-time Best FIFA Coach, she has since led the USA to Olympic gold in Paris 2024.
Champions League winners Arsenal dominated the WSL Team of the Year with Emily Fox, Kim Little, Mariona Caldentey, and Alessia Russo named in the XI. They were joined by Manchester United trio Phallon Tullis-Joyce, Maya Le Tissier, and Jayde Riviere, Chelsea’s Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert, and Manchester City duo Yui Hasegawa and Mary Fowler.
In the Premier League Team of the Year, champions Liverpool and runners-up Arsenal led the way.
Salah, Mac Allister, Van Dijk, and Gravenberch represented Liverpool, while Rice, Saliba, and Gabriel featured for Arsenal. Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels and Chris Wood earned surprise spots, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez now at Liverpool completing the XI.
He joins a list of rising prospects that includes Arsenal duo Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, Dean Huijsen and Kerkez, who moved from Bournemouth to Real Madrid and Liverpool respectively, and Chelsea forward Liam Delap, after his breakout at Ipswich.
Manchester City and former Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford was named PFA Championship Player of the Year. He edged out a shortlist that included Josh Brownhill, Gustavo Hamer, Daniel James, Borja Sainz, and Ao Tanaka.
Wycombe Wanderers forward Richard Kone was named PFA League One Player of the Year, beating nominees Tomoki Iwata, Davis Keillor-Dunn, Charlie Kelman, Kwame Poku, and Jay Stansfield.
In League Two, Bromley striker Michael Cheek took the top honour ahead of Alassana Jatta, Nathan Lowe, David McGoldrick, Luke Molyneux, and Jack Payne.
