Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stressed the need for collaboration with architects and other professionals in the built environment for sustainable development.

He made this remark during the 6th Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) at Ecobank Pan African Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Saturday.

The governor was represented at the event by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

He said architecture shapes the spaces where people live, work, and flourish.

He stated, “As Lagos grows into a megacity and economic hub, collaboration ensures our infrastructure meets top standards of sustainability and innovation.’’

He added that the approach would help build a Lagos that is functional, beautiful, safe, and inclusive for all residents.

Mr Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed that architecture is vital for sustainable national development, influencing economic progress, social well-being, and environmental care.

He said the Lagos State Government recognises the key role architects play in transforming the urban landscape into a resilient and inclusive model.

He urged professionals, including architects, to speak up and ensure the right steps are taken in shaping the environment.

“There’s a belief that civilisation thrives when people maintain a decent, God-given environment meant to be beautiful,” he added.

He stressed that professionals must help influence how this beauty is preserved and enhanced.

Mr Sanwo-Olu also praised the Nigerian Institute of Architects for hosting the lecture and promoting excellence and visionary thinking in the profession.

He encouraged more knowledge-sharing and active participation to drive architectural excellence across Nigeria.

In her lecture titled, “Harmony in Diversity, ‘’ NIA’s first female President, Olubukunola Ejiwunmi, urged Nigerians to support policies that prioritise sustainability and equity.

Mrs Ejiwunmi, a retired Lagos State Permanent Secretary, said harmony requires listening deeply, designing purposefully, and leading with courage.

She noted that by doing so, architects honour their profession and their duty as stewards of a diverse and united nation.

She said architects must build not only with concrete and steel but also with conviction and compassion.

Mrs Ejiwunmi emphasised that harmony in diversity should be embraced not as a slogan, but as a guiding professional principle.

Earlier, NIA President, Mobolaji Adeniyi, described the annual lecture as a celebration of architectural excellence.

She said the theme, “Harmony in Diversity,’’ was both timely and relevant, urging architects to harness their diversity for a better future.
