Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to reinforce its commitment to integrity, accountability and improved performance in its road safety mandate.

Mr Akume made the call, while addressing commanding officers during the 2025 Half-Year Strategy Session of the corps on Wednesday in Abuja.

The SGF was represented by the new Permanent Secretary, Office of General Services, Sanusi Danjuma.

He said that the session remained a veritable platform for performance review and strategic planning aimed at reducing road crashes and enhancing safety on Nigerian roads.

He stated, “This strategy session is essential for monitoring and evaluating performance. It highlights both strengths and weaknesses and helps identify training and development needs critical to human resource development. Land transportation remains the dominant mode for the movement of people, goods and services, which places a heavy responsibility on the FRSC to secure the nation’s highways.’’

The SGF, however, lauded the corps for its achievements despite prevailing challenges.

Akume noted that Nigeria’s election to host the Permanent Secretariat of the Africa Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies and its chairmanship of the West African Road Safety Organisation were clear indications of strategic leadership.

“Nigeria also emerged the best in Road Safety Management in Africa. These are landmark achievements that are worthy of commendation,” he said.

The SGF, who acknowledged the issue of paucity of funds, however, commended the corps for its resilience and innovation, especially in leveraging technology to improve road safety management.

He noted that the FRSC Mobile App and the National Crash Information System had significantly enhanced real-time traffic monitoring and data-driven decision-making.

“These innovations clearly show that the corps has keyed into President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to ensure safety and security for all Nigerians,” he said.

Mr Akume, therefore, assured the corps of the government’s continued support in achieving its vision of zero road traffic deaths.

He charged participants to remain focused on the theme of the session, “Driving Change from Within: Reinforcing Integrity, Accountability and Performance.”

“This theme aligns with the vision of the government to entrench a culture of responsibility across all sectors. I urge you to take ownership, direct decisions and resources towards achieving FRSC’s corporate goals,” he said.

The SGF commended the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed and the entire FRSC staff for their dedication and commitment, urging them to sustain the momentum.
