Spain declares three-day mourning over 68 killed in high-speed train collision

The government of Spain has declared a three-day mourning over the high-speed train collision in Toledo province that claimed 68 people on Wednesday.
The three-day mourning starts on Thursday and will end on Saturday.
Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, on Thursday in a post on X said, “Spain is mourning. We extend all our solidarity to the families of the victims and to the injured, to whom we wish a speedy recovery.”
Speaking at the site of the crash, Mr Sanchez noted, “We are working to clarify the origin of this tragedy. If there have been negligences or failures, it will be known. And decisive action will be taken.”
He added, “It’s not acceptable in a country like Spain” to suffer two serious rail accidents in a year.
The Toledo train collision is the third rail disaster in Spain in 2026, following two high-speed train collisions near Adamuz in January and another in southern Spain’s Córdoba province, which killed over 40 people.
Death toll from the latest crash is now close to the 2013 train crash at Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain in which about 80 people died.
