A Syrian national has been sentenced to life imprisonment after a German court on Wednesday found him guilty of carrying out a deadly terrorist attack.

The attack took place during a street festival in the western city of Solingen in August last year.

Issa al-Hasan, 27, received the maximum sentence for three counts of murder and multiple other charges, with the Düsseldorf Regional Court recognising the particular severity of his crimes.

On August 23, 2024, three people were killed and eight others injured in a knife attack in Solingen, a city of around 170,000 located east of Düsseldorf. The Islamic State terror group later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mr Al-Hasan turned himself in several days after the incident and has been on trial in Düsseldorf since late May. He admitted to the stabbings on the first day of the proceedings.

The victims included two men, aged 56 and 67, and a 56-year-old woman.
