The commission warned that “any attempt to rubbish this census exercise with laxity shall be met with stiff consequences and penalties.”
Nigeria recorded a slight decrease in malaria prevalence, from 23 per cent in 2018 to 22 per cent in 2021, health minister Osagie Ehanire says.
The National Population Commission had been conducting trial censuses across the country in preparation for a national census in 2023.
The trial census “is a dress rehearsal to evaluate all aspects of the census operation before the main census on a limited scale.”
“We commenced with the enumeration of homeless persons. The success is beyond our expectations.”
The commission said the enumeration was part of preparations for the trial census in some selected enumeration areas.
“This call centre will serve as an information hub for a seamless interface between NPC and the public before, during and after the census exercise.”
The proposed census for 2022 will now be conducted after the general elections in 2023.
Lawmakers said that the National Population Commission had only managed to register the birth of 57 per cent of children under five years since 1960.
“We do not want children to be taken to prison.”
