Akwa Ibom is driving Nigeria’s latest COVID-19 surge as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirms 517 additional infections between August 6 and 11.
With 750 cases, Lagos, the epicentre of the virus, accounted for more than 90 per cent of the new infections.
Notwithstanding, the public health agency said “prevalence is very low, contrary to what many people think, the total number of cases from 2017 to date is 569.”
NCDC said Nigeria had a confirmed total cases of 31 in 12 states and the FCT from January 1 to June 5.
The disease control office said its recent study confirmed a high risk of exposure across the country.
Earlier, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control had pegged the figure at 111,062 cases, with 3,604 deaths; exceeding the number of cases and deaths registered in 2020.
Between January and August 2021, there were 67,000 cases of measles across the country.
“It was beyond us, but we have already apologised to our players and officials over this incident.”
The nationwide death toll from the virus remains 3,135, and 229,019 discharged.
“Eleven LGAs across five states of Bauchi (four), Zamfara (four), Kano (one), Katsina (one) and Borno (one) reported more than 1,000 cases each…”
