TikToker Mirabel recants, says rape allegation false alarm
Nigerian TikToker Abigail Nsuka, popularly known as Mirabel, admitted on Thursday that her earlier rape allegation was false, saying she has been battling panic attacks, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts.
Her initial allegation that she was raped in her apartment and sent messages by the suspect sparked reactions online, with some social media users accusing Mirabel of lying and arguing that her story had inconsistencies.
Others created hashtags in her support and shared posts expressing concern about her well-being.
The new development emerged after Nigerian activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, shared a video of a phone conversation he had with the young lady.
In the recording posted online, Ms Mirabel acknowledged that the rape claim was untrue when asked directly by the activist.
“So in a nutshell, the story about the rape is not true?” he asked.
“Yes sir,” she responded.
During the call, Ms Mirabel said she takes “a medicine with Sprite,” which she later identified as codeine.
VeryDarkMan told her that mixing codeine with alcohol can cause hallucinations and suggested that it was possible she may have imagined parts of the incident.
He asked, “Do you think hallucinations caused this?”
“It’s true,” she replied, after initially saying she did not fully understand how hallucinations work.
Ms Mirabel also opened up about her mental health struggles, saying she suffers from panic attacks and engages in self-harm.
“On a normal day I do cut myself but I don’t think I’ll do that kind of a thing to myself. I have panic attacks so I do self injuries so I can be fine. I’ve been suicidal, that’s why I just wanted to end it all, I’m tired,” she said during the call.
She further claimed that she created the alternate account used to amplify the allegation herself, admitting, “Yes sir, please sir, help me I’m tired,” when confronted.
The TikToker also mentioned that she had been in what she described as a toxic lesbian relationship.
Her initial allegation had gone viral on social media, prompting statements from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and the Ogun State police command, which confirmed that an investigation was ongoing.
