The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) have applauded the federal government for releasing funds to pay eight months of accumulated allowances to eligible academic staff.

The ‌⁠‍‍⁠⁠‌⁠⁠‍⁠‌⁠‌payment covers the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for academic staff in federal tertiary institutions from January to August.

In a statement issued by its chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi and secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, on Wednesday, TMV described the payment as good faith.

The group said the payment was in line with the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN-ASUU) agreement.

It noted that the payment would apply across federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

TMV said the development would help guarantee stability in the academic calendar and reduce disruptions associated with industrial actions.

“We commend the move by the federal government, as it will guarantee stability in the academic calendar of the tertiary institutions.

“This is unlike in the past when Nigerian tertiary institutions witnessed prevalent industrial actions by academic staff,” it said.

The group also commended the prompt payment of salaries and allowances to tertiary institution workers under the Tinubu administration.

It said the administration had also provided assurance of retirement benefits for academic and non-academic retirees.

TMV said the development represented progress in resolving longstanding disagreements between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
