Trump vows U.S. will disarm Hamas if it violates ceasefire, warns it could be ‘violent’
President Donald Trump has vowed that the United States could “violently” disarm the Palestinian armed group Hamas if it fails to disarm as agreed in the ceasefire.
Mr Trump, who brokered the peace deal between Israel and Palestine, disclosed this when asked how he wants to ensure Hamas keeps to the disarmament clause of the peace deal for lasting peace in the region.
Asked what he would do to ensure disarmament of Hamas in an interview with journalists in the White House on Tuesday, Mr Trump said, “Well, they’re going to disarm, and because they said they were going to disarm. And if they don’t disarm, we will disarm them.”
Pressed further on how he hopes to achieve that, Mr Trump said, “I don’t have to explain that to you, but if they don’t disarm, we will disarm them.”
The American president added, “They know I’m not playing games, okay. And if they don’t disarm, we will disarm them, and it’ll happen quickly and perhaps violently. But they will disarm. Do you understand me?”
Since the peace deal saw Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza, Hamas militias have emerged from their enclaves to exert control in the territory.
Hours after the ceasefire deal on Monday, Hamas carried out a public execution, killing at least eight men blindfolded with their hands tied to their backs.
A video of the public execution went viral, but Hamas claimed those executed were “criminals and collaborators with Israel.”
Also, at least 27 people were killed in a fatal clash between Hamas militias and armed members of the Dughmush family, a prominent clan, in Gaza.
