Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have joined to plead for leniency to halt planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The House had recently issued impeachment notice to Mr Fubara and his deputy, Nma Odu, on grounds of alleged misconduct.

Barile Nwakoh representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi representing Obio/Akpor Constituency II on Wednesday joined in the plea.

Their effort came barely 24 hours after two members sued for dialogue.

Messrs Nwakoh and Amadi, however, acknowledged that the governor and his deputy committed constitutional infractions even as they prayed the house for leniency.

According to the lawmakers, their decision to join in the plea followed interventions by respected leaders and stakeholders within and outside the state.

The house had issued an impeachment notice against Mr Fubara and his deputy, siting gross misconduct as bases for their decision.

The House Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, were the first two who advocated for leniency on the matter.

The plea has invariably reduced the number of lawmakers who initially signed the impeachment notice to 26 to 22.
