Two teenagers die after canoe capsizes in Jigawa river

The police command in Jigawa has confirmed the death of two boys in a capsized canoe at River Miga in the Miga local government area.
Lawan Shiisu, the command’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Dutse.
Mr Shiisu said the deceased, aged 12 and 14, died after the canoe carrying nine persons capsized at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday.
He said the incident occurred when the deceased and seven others returned from a farm in Galauchime and Sansani villages.
“On Sunday, at about 10:00 a.m., information from a reliable source revealed that on Saturday, at about 9:00 p.m., nine farmers were returning from their farms in Galauchime village in Miga LGA of Jigawa state,” said the police statement. “On reaching a river, they boarded a canoe paddled by one Ado Dan Maguga to sail to Sansani.”
It added, ”Unfortunately, the canoe capsized due to the rain and wind storm. Seven people were rescued while the others, Imran Rabiu, aged 12 and Tasiu Rabiu, aged 14, two were not.”
According to the police, the remains of the children had been released to their families for burial.
