U.S. pledges support for Sokoto’s development

The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has pledged greater support for Sokoto state to improve citizens’ wellbeing and preserve its cultural heritage.
Mr Mills gave this assurance during a visit to Gov. Ahmad Aliyu on Thursday in Sokoto.
He said the visit aimed to engage with the people and recognise Sokoto’s cultural significance in Nigeria.
Mr Mills expressed his understanding of the government’s priorities as outlined in his nine-point agenda, emphasising the need for support to improve the wellbeing of the citizens.
In response, the governor thanked the ambassador for his visit and commended the U.S for its continued support to Nigeria, particularly through USAID initiatives.
He appealed for further assistance in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, youth and women empowerment, poverty alleviation, and other developmental sectors.
On security, Mr Aliyu highlighted the state government’s efforts to address challenges, including the provision of 150 vehicles and other logistical support to law enforcement agencies.
He also noted the establishment of a community security watch to complement conventional security forces while upholding human rights and dignity.
Mr Aliyu mentioned that the issue of state policing remains a key topic of discussion among governors, stakeholders, and citizens.
During the visit, the governor presented a souvenir to the ambassador, who also held discussions with traditional rulers on various issues.
