U.S raises Tanzania’s travel advisory level over unrest, targeting of gays, lesbians

The United States has increased Tanzania’s travel advisory notification to Level 3, citing unrest, crime, terrorism, and the continued targeting of gays and lesbians as underlying reasons.
Stating ‘unrest’ as a primary factor, the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs, on Monday, replaced the September 2024 Level 2 travel advisory notice, sounding an alarm, as “some areas have increased in risk.”
“The Department of State updated its Travel Advisory for Tanzania on October 31, 2025, to reflect that the travel advisory level for Tanzania increased from Level 2 to Level 3—Reconsider Travel. This replaces the previous travel advisory issued on September 5, 2024,” the United States noted.
The advisory, known as a routine security assessment, follows widespread demonstrations in Tanzania, premised on election dissatisfaction among Tanzanians and opposition figures alike.
Cautioning its citizens, the United States noted that “Demonstrations often take place in response to political or economic issues. They may also occur on holidays or during large events. Demonstrations can be unpredictable.”
“The Tanzanian government increases security presence around protests. This includes stationary checkpoints and roadblocks. The Tanzanian government limits or does not authorize large gatherings,” it added.
The U.S advisory highlighted the prevalence of violent crime, including assault, sexual assault, robberies, mugging, and carjacking, while emphasising that local police in the country have limited resources to effectively respond to serious crime.
It warned about the risk of possible terrorist violence, particularly in the Mtwara region.
Citing the risk of more attacks on gay and lesbian individuals, the United States confirmed that members of the two communities have been arrested, targeted, and harassed.
“People who identify as gay or lesbian may experience a higher likelihood of being targeted by police. People detained under suspicion of same-sex sexual conduct may face invasive physical exams,” it said.
Urging intending travellers to exercise caution, the United States suggested having an extra plan to leave in an emergency that does not depend on its intervention, monitoring local media reports, keeping a low profile, and regularly carrying a copy of their passport and visa as important tips.
The Level 3 travel advisory notice follows two preceding levels, which previously highlighted normal precautions and subsequently increased caution.
