Welder jailed six months for cheating

A Central Area Court in Kasuwan Nama in Jos has sentenced a 39-year-old welder, Kingsley Onwo, to six months in prison for breach of contract and cheating.
On Tuesday, a panel of two magistrates, Ghazali Adam and Hyacinth Dolnaan, sentenced Mr Onwo after pleading guilty to the two-count charge.
The panel, however, gave him an option of N15,000 fine and to pay compensation of N30,000 to the complainant.
The panel said that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to others.
Prosecutor Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported on September 7 at the ‘C’ Division Police Station by one Joel Mahwash.
Mr Gokwat explained that Mr Mahwash entrusted the convict with N60,000 to fabricate an iron protector but “criminally bought lower quality iron and converted the remaining money to his personal use.”
According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 363 and 307 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
