A magistrates’ court in Jos on Thursday sentenced a 23-year-old wheelbarrow pusher, Umar Musa, to five years’ imprisonment for stealing customers’ goods.

The convict pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of breach of trust and misappropriation filed against him by the police.

The magistrate, Irene Pati, however, gave Mr Musa an option of a N100,000 fine for the first count and a N50,000 fine for the second count.

She also ordered him to pay N920,000 in compensation to the complainant.

While reviewing the facts, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the complainant, Sileiman Umar, reported the case on March 10 at the ‘C’ Division Police station.

Mr Gokwat said the convict was given 20 cartons of Maggi seasoning cubes, 19 cartons of Onga stew seasoning and 10 cartons of spaghetti, all valued at N920,000, to take to the customer’s shop in the market, and he absconded with the goods.

The police said that the convict sold the stolen items in the same market.
