Woman arraigned over alleged assault, damaging Plasma TV worth N979,000
A 35-year-old woman, Ajoke Akindiya on Friday appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo, Ogun State, for allegedly assaulting another woman and damaging a 32-inch solar plasma television valued at N979,000.
Akindiya who resides at Iyana Cele, Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta, is standing trial on a three-count charge of assault, malicious damage and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The defendant, however pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, ASP Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 7, at about 9:20 p.m. at White House, Oke-Aregba, area in Abeokuta.
Mr Olu-Balogun alleged that the defendant unlawfully assaulted one Funmilayo Olaniyi by striking her with fist blows.
He further alleged that Akindiya maliciously and wilfully damaged the 32-inch solar plasma television valued at N979,000, property of Sun King Solar Ltd., by smashing it on the ground.
He added that the defendant conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by unlawfully damaging the television and locking Olaniyi inside her apartment.
According to him, the defendant obtained the plasma television in January 2025 under an instalment payment plan from the complainant, Olaniyi, an agent with Sun-King Solar Ltd.
“After some months, the defendant began defaulting on her payments, prompting the complainant to visit her home to retrieve the television until the outstanding balance was fully settled.
“On getting to the defendant’s home, Olaniyi informed her of development but she immediately began assaulting the complainant by giving her fist blow on her body and forcefully collected the plasma TV and smashed it on the floor,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 351, 451 and 249(d) of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun 2006.
The Magistrate, A.K. Araba, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum, adding the surety must be a Bondsman registered with Ogun State judiciary.
She thereafter adjourned the case until March 10, for hearing.
