Woman docked for allegedly stealing 74 bags of rice

A 36-year-old woman, Oritoke Olaniyan, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 74 bags of rice worth over N2 million.
The defendant, a trader, who resides at 10b, Modele Compound, Tejuosho in Yaba, Lagos, was docked for conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Inspector Segun Oke told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offence in December, 2021 at Iddo Main Market, Iddo, Lagos.
Mr Oke alleged that the defendant and others at large had agreed to supply 1,540 bags of rice to the complainant, May Ukara, but supplied only 1,466 bags, leaving 74 bags out of the agreement.
The prosecutor said that the defendant had allegedly failed to supply the 74 bags of rice since December 2021.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate, M. C. Ayinde granted the defendant bail in the sum of N400,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Mr Ayinde adjourned the case until August 31 for mention.
