YouTube star Jake Paul defeats Tyron Woodley in boxing debut
Undefeated YouTube star-turned-pro boxer Jake Paul defeated former UFC Welterweight Champion by split decision in his boxing debut, which took place in Cleveland, Ohio, Jake’s hometown.
The boxing event was heralded as one of the biggest pay-per-view cards of the year, featuring the American debuts of Tommy Fury (Tyson Fury’s brother), who got a four-round unanimous decision over MMA fighter Anthony ‘Pretty Boy’ Taylor.
It also featured the U.S. debut of top British heavyweight prospect Daniel Dubois who got a fight round stoppage of Joe Cusumano.
The Co-Main event featured seven division women’s boxing world champion Amanda Serrano who got a dominant unanimous decision victory over Yamileth Mercado.
In the main event, Woodley, considered the biggest test of Jake Paul’s career, gave him all he could handle. The fight started well for Jake as he established his jab in the first three rounds.
In round four, Woodley hit Jake with an overhand right that stumbled him with a minute to go. It would have been ruled a knockdown had the ropes not saved Jake from hitting the canvas.
Jake recovered and battled fatigue to finish the fight, and in the end, two judges gave Jake a score of 77-75 & 78-74, while the last judge had it 77-75 Woodley.
After the fight was over, Woodley requested an immediate rematch. Jake did not seem enthusiastic.
It’s left to be seen what is next for both fighters.
