Zamfara chamber of commerce urges calm over leadership crisis

The president of the Zamfara Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ZACCIMA), Hassan Buhari, has called on the members of the chamber to remain calm over recent appointments of its caretaker committee executives by the state government.
Mr Buhari made the call while speaking with journalists in Gusau on Monday.
There has been a crisis among the leadership of the chamber over the appointment of the caretaker executives of the chamber by the state government.
There were also allegations by some members of the chamber that the appointment of the caretaker executives of the chamber by the state government was illegal.
Also speaking in Gusau, the director-general of the chamber, Lawal Muhammad, had earlier raised allegations of irregularities in the appointment of the caretaker executives of the chamber and the suspension of its annual general meeting by the state government.
Mr Muhammad described the appointment of the caretaker committee of the chamber by the state Ministry of Commerce, Industries and Tourism, describing it as unconstitutional.
He said all the constitutional requirements for the election of the new executives of the chamber were violated.
He said, “Such a development was unacceptable,” adding that the chamber was a private entity that does not require any interference from the government at any level.
“We are therefore appealing to Governor Dauda Lawal for an amicable resolution,” the director-general explained.
The ZACCIMA president noted that the appointment of 15 men by the state government as caretaker executives of the chamber was lawful.
He added that the state government’s intervention was necessary to sanitise the chamber.
“Therefore, there is not any crisis as regards recent state government intervention in the appointment of the caretaker leadership of the chamber,” he said.
