92-year-old President Biya seeks eighth term to extend 43-year reign in Cameroon

President Paul Biya on Sunday declared he would seek an eighth term in office ahead of Cameroon’s October presidential election.
Mr Biya, 92, in a post on X, announced his reelection bid, which would see him remain in power in Cameroon for over four decades.
“I am a candidate for the 12 October 2025 presidential election. Rest assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the serious challenges facing us,” Mr Biya said. “Together, there are no challenges we cannot meet. The best is still to come.”
Mr Biya has served as Cameroon’s president since 1982, when he assumed office as the country’s second president.
As the leader of his party, Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, Mr Biya is the party’s candidate for the next election.
