Amidst security challenges, especially in the North, army chief Waidi Shaibu has assured Nigerians of improved security across the country.

Mr Shaibu gave the assurances during his visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.

“I just came to brief him on the outcome of my visit to the northeast region and look at other security situations across the country, which were satisfactory within this period,” the army chief stated.

Asked about what Nigerians should expect after his visit to the region, Mr Shaibu replied, “Improved security across the country.”

Mr Waidi’s visit to Mr Tinubu came amid President Donald Trump’s declaration of Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’ and threat to invade the country over alleged Christian genocide.

Meanwhile, the Tinubu government stated that diplomatic engagement between the country and the U.S. was ongoing and yielding positive results.

In an interview on ‘The World With Yalda Hakim’, a UK-based Sky News programme on Monday, information minister Mohammed Idris said, “Channels of communication have been opened. I can confirm that. We are talking to them, and I believe they are now appreciating the situation better.”

While noting that the U.S. was misled to mischaracterise killings in the country, Mr Idris said intelligence revealed links between a proscribed separatist organisation in Nigeria and certain U.S.-based lobby groups allegedly working together to mischaracterise Nigeria’s situation to the U.S.

“We have observed a direct connection between lobbyists in the United States and a proscribed terrorist group in Nigeria. These groups are actively engaging influential people in the U.S. to advance misleading narratives,” the minister stated.
