Human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has condemned a deadly attack targeted at worshippers during morning prayers at Na’alma village, Malumfashi Local Government Area, Katsina State.

Describing Wednesday’s incident as “horrific”, the rights group, in a statement, said the latest attack occurred two months after gunmen murdered more than 50 people in a mosque at Unguwan Mantau village within the same local government area.

“The number of people killed by the gunmen widely referred to as ‘bandits’ is yet to be ascertained, as dozens of people who tried to escape are still missing, while many critically injured are receiving treatment at hospitals,” Amnesty International said.

Faulting the government’s habitual response of issuing press statements, the human rights organisation called on the federal and state governments to show genuine commitment to protecting lives and property.

It noted, “A genuine commitment to protecting the people must be demonstrated by ensuring adequate security of lives and property, as well as ensuring justice for the victims.”

Highlighting the root cause of the recurring incidents, the organisation stressed that the enduring failure of Nigerian authorities to apprehend suspected perpetrators and ensure justice has continued to embolden impunity and more gruesome attacks.
