Former Governor Rotimi Amaechi has joined protesters to force the Senate to rescind its decision not to make real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory in the Electoral Act.

Former Governor Peter Obi was part of the protest on Monday.

Addressing journalists at the protest ground, Mr Amaechi argued that the living conditions of Nigerians have worsened under President Bola Tinubu more than they were when he served as transportation minister during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Life is worse now than the time I was with the APC during Buhari’s time. I know that they are stealing, look at the $16 billion dollars coastal road contract without due process,” Mr Amaechi said.

Speaking on the chance of Mr Tinubu winning the election again despite the effort Mr Amaechi and his new African Democratic Congress are putting in place ahead of the 2027 general election, the politician said, “Let’s wait and see. It is the will of the people. How will he win?”

Meanwhile, the Senate is set to hold an emergency plenary session on Tuesday amid growing outcry over the move to abruptly ditch a provision mandating the real-time transmission of election results while passing the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, 2026 into law.
