France’s President Emmanuel Macron is currently dealing with a potential impeachment conspiracy in the French parliament after he forced a measure last week raising the retirement age in France from 62 to 64 without a full parliamentary vote.

Last week, Mr Macron gave his prime minister the go-ahead to use a rare constitutional authority to bypass parliament and push a divisive bill raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 without a vote.

Critiquing the president’s action, the leader of the French Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, referred to Mr Macron’s conduct as a coup d’état. 

“We have a president who makes use of a permanent coup d’état,” he said.

According to the New York Times, the French parliament has responded with two motions of no confidence in Mr Macron’s government.

However, due to political divides in the opposition, they are unlikely to be upheld when legislators vote on them Monday, but they are an expression of indignation.

With his proposals for pension reform, essential to his idea of making the French economy more competitive, Mr Macron has put his legacy on the line.
