Two gunmen attacked a home in South Africa and shot 10 members of the same family to death.

The oldest victim of the mass shooting was 65-year-old while the youngest was a 13-year-old teenager.

Jay Naicker, police spokesperson in South Africa said the victims were shot dead in their home at Pietermaritzburg in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.

He added that the bodies were found in the early hours of Friday after neighbours alerted the police about the shooting.

“In the early hours of this morning, police in Plessislaer were informed of gunshots emanating from Imbali, Unit 14,” the police spokesperson said.

“When they attended the scene, they found 10 members of one family were shot and fatally wounded in one of the homes.”

“It is believed that two unknown gunmen entered the home and opened fire on the family members – seven females and three males.”

Bheki Cele, police minister in South Africa, said the motive for the attack was unknown, adding that four suspects were confronted by the police.

He said two suspects were arrested in connection with the dead victims, while one suspect was shot dead during a shootout with police.

The police official said one suspect is on the run adding that three guns were recovered from the suspects.

Police shot back, killed one, and injured one, who was arrested, and one was arrested uninjured. One ran away,” Mr Cele said. “Fortunately, they know who ran away.”
