At least 10 tons of hard drugs were seized in Kaduna, says the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The anti-narcotics agency also revealed that it nabbed no fewer than 900 suspected drug traffickers.

NDLEA commander in Kaduna Umar Adoro announced this on Wednesday when the leadership of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, Kaduna council, paid him a courtesy visit.

Mr Adoro also disclosed that although some suspects had been convicted, about 600 were counselled and handed over to relevant stakeholders in their various communities.

According to the NDLEA official, the seizure of the drugs haul and arrests were made in one year.

He explained that within the period, too, about 10 tons of hard drugs were seized and that the agency prevented another large consignment of such drugs from being trafficked to neighbouring states.

The NDLEA commander stated that the clerics were invited to the command headquarters for a briefing on the command’s efforts in the fight against illicit drugs in Kaduna.

“Large number of people in society look up to you as leaders in every community. Please reach out to this larger society, preach to them and sensitise them on the dangers of illicit drugs and their consumption,” stated Mr Adoro. “If people are sensitised, society will be safer; Illicit drugs are contributing to security threats in our communities.”

Deputy chairman of the council, Abdulkarim Hashim, pledged the council’s readiness to assist the agency in the fight against drug abuse.

“We will use our places of worship to preach on the dangers of illicit drugs in our society. It is a task, and by the grace of God, we will do it,” Mr Hashim said.
