The people of Ibaji Local Government Area in Kogi have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to construct a modern farm produce market in the area.

They also urged him to rehabilitate the Idah–Ibaji–Otuocha federal highway to ease transportation and boost economic activities.

The appeal follows a tragic boat accident on the River Niger that claimed many lives on September 29.

The mishap occurred when a wooden boat conveying traders from Ibaji to Ilushi Market in Edo capsized, killing dozens of people.

The Coterie of Ibaji Youths (COIY) made the appeal in a statement jointly signed by its Board of Trustees chairman, Tony Edike, and national coordinator, Jerry Nwuchola.

The group said Ibaji had suffered long years of neglect and urged Mr Tinubu to intervene urgently.

It blamed the tragedy on the absence of basic infrastructure, including a modern market and motorable roads, which compel traders to use dangerous waterways.

COIY called for the construction of a centrally located, functional market in Ibaji to reduce dependence on risky boat trips to distant markets.

“In spite of being a major producer of rice, yam, cassava, fish, and vegetables, Ibaji lacks electricity, good roads, schools, and healthcare facilities,” the group said.

The youths also asked the president to revive the abandoned Idah–Ibaji–Otuocha Highway project to shorten travel time between Anambra and Abuja.

They stressed that both projects would prevent future tragedies and stimulate commerce and employment in the area.

“Mr president, we hold firmly to your Renewed Hope Agenda. Let Ibaji feel this hope through real infrastructure and lasting change,” the statement read.

Mr Tinubu had earlier commiserated with the government and people of Kogi over the boat accident, describing it as “shocking and unfortunate.”
