The Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed its worry over the threat COVID-19 third wave, urging the federal and state government to properly monitor immigrants coming into the country.

Rotimi Olowo, representing Shomolu Constituency, presented this as a motion at plenary on Monday under matters of urgent public importance.

The lawmaker called on the government to ensure that immigrants observe the mandatory COVID-19 quarantine and other protocols in the country.

He added that the government should ensure Lagosians conduct COVID-19 test and enlighten the public on the importance of observing coronavirus protocol.

“The Lagos State government should embark on the enlightenment of members of the public on the need to observe COVID-19 protocols such as covering their nose, washing of hands and maintaining social distance,” he said.

“The Lagos state governor should also direct the state Commissioner for Health to ensure proper COVID-19 tests across the state.

“There should be enlightenment in schools, churches, mosques, markets and clubs and COVID-19 vaccines must be made available to the people of the state.”

Supporting the motion, Oluyinka Ogundimu, representing Agege Constituency, said it is crucial for government to test immigrant coming into the country.

Other members of the Lagos State Assembly support the issues raise in the motion during the plenary.

The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, directed the Clerk of the Assembly, Olalekan Onafeko, to transmit the motion to the state governor.

Mr Obasa said the vaccines available are not adequate enough to cover the third wave of the pandemic, adding that the economic situation of the country cannot withstand another lockdown.

He said further that precautionary measure must be observed in order to curb the virus from spreading.
