Lagos: NYSC takes medical outreach to Surulere

No fewer than 200 residents of Surulere, Lagos State, benefited from a medical outreach by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Lagos State Secretariat.
The outreach, which took place on Tuesday, was tagged “Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers.”
The NYSC coordinator in Lagos State, Eddy Megwa, said that the event was aimed at bringing medical services to the grassroots.
The outreach was held at Shitta Open Ground, Abebe Field, Surulere Local Government Area.
“We are delighted to have a huge turnout, about 200 people comprising of old and young people in this Surulere LGA. It shows that they embraced the outreach.
“The director-general of NYSC introduced this programme which is being observed across the nation today.
“It is important to note that this group of medical corp members are passionate to give back to the society. We have among them doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and opticians.
“The beneficiaries are having their blood pressure, blood sugar and eyes checked. We are also giving them medicines as the case may be. That is the spirit of NYSC,” Mr Megwa said.
He was represented by NYSC’s Assistant Director of Human Resource Management, Uzoamaka Ogunrayewa.
According to Mr Megwa, the quarterly medical outreach is also aimed at reminding rural dwellers about the need to have their health checked regularly.
The chairman of Surulere council area, Suleiman Yusuf, praised the NYSC for the initiative and urged the residents to take advantage of it to improve their health.
A beneficiary, Ramat Abdulkareem, said she had been longing to visit a hospital to have her health checked.
“It is as if this programme was brought here for my sake. I am relieved,” she said.
