Linda Lavin, star of ‘Alice,’ dies at 87

Her transition to television came with guest roles in popular shows before she landed the lead in “Alice”, which ran from 1976 to 1985.

Linda Lavin, the award-winning actress known for starring in the 1970s and 80s sitcom “Alice”, died on Sunday in Los Angeles at 87.

Michael Gagliardo, her representative, confirmed that the cause was complications of lung cancer.  

Renowned for her sharp comedic timing and heartfelt performances, Lavin gained widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Alice Hyatt, a single mother and aspiring singer working as a waitress.

Her role in “Alice” earned her two Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy nomination, making her a household name.  

Lavin’s roles in productions like “Broadway Bound” and “The Lyons” showcased her dramatic range and earned her a Tony Award and multiple nominations.  

Fans and fellow actors have shared tributes, remembering Lavin for her talent and mentorship within the entertainment industry.  

Born on October 15, 1937, in Portland, Maine, Lavin grew up in a musical family and developed a love for performing at an early age.

She studied theatre at the College of William & Mary, where she honed her craft before pursuing a career in acting.  

Lavin made her Broadway debut in the 1960s, earning recognition for her work in musicals like “It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman.”

Her transition to television came with guest roles in popular shows before she landed the lead in “Alice”, which ran from 1976 to 1985.  

Later in life, she continued to perform in theatre, including standout appearances in “Collected Stories” and “Our Mother’s Brief Affair.”

She also appeared in films like “The Back-up Plan” and TV shows like “Mom.”

In her personal life, Ms Lavin was married three times and found lasting happiness with her third husband, musician Steve Bakunas.
