My parents prioritise family brand name over my marital happiness, says David Beckham’s son

Brooklyn Beckham, the eldest son of football icon David Beckham and fashion designer Victoria Beckham, has said his parents repeatedly tried to sabotage his marriage to Nicola Peltz Beckham.
In a statement shared on his Instagram story on Monday, Mr Beckham said he had “been silent for years” and made several efforts to keep family issues private but felt compelled to speak out after what he described as continued media briefings by his parents and their team.
He wrote, “Unfortunately, my parents and their team have continued to go to the press, leaving me with no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.”
Mr Beckham said he no longer wished to reconcile with his family, stressing that his decision was not influenced by his wife, actress Nicola Peltz Beckham.
“I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life,” he stated.
He accused his parents of controlling narratives about their family through the media and social media, describing public appearances and online posts as “performative” and “inauthentic.”
According to him, tensions escalated ahead of his wedding in 2022, alleging that his mother cancelled plans to design his wife’s wedding dress at the last minute, forcing Ms Peltz Beckham to urgently find another option.
Mr Beckham further alleged that weeks before the wedding, his parents pressured him to sign away the rights to his name, a move he said would have affected his wife and future children.
“They were adamant on me signing before my wedding date because then the terms of the deal would be initiated,” he wrote, adding that his refusal changed how he was treated by his family.
He also recounted several incidents from the wedding period, including claims that family members told him his wife was “not blood” and “not family,” and that his mother disrupted his planned first dance with his wife in front of guests.
He stated, “My mum hijacked my first dance with my wife… I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life.”
Mr Beckham said his wife had been repeatedly disrespected by his family, alleging that women from his past were deliberately brought into their lives.
He added that his parents attempted to exclude his wife from family engagements, including his father’s birthday celebration.
He accused his family of prioritising brand image over genuine relationships.
“Brand Beckham comes first,” he wrote, adding that family support appeared to depend on public appearances and social media promotion.
Mr Beckham said stepping away from his family had eased long-standing anxiety.
“For the first time in my life, since stepping away from my family, that anxiety has disappeared,” he wrote. “I wake up every morning grateful for the life I chose.”
He concluded by saying he and his wife desired a life centred on peace, privacy and happiness rather than media image and manipulation.
The couple began dating in 2019 and announced their engagement in July 2020.
They married in April 2022 in a high-profile ceremony held at the Peltz family estate in Florida.
