NYSC probes official’s role in Ogun corps member’s death after botched abortion

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says a staff member is under investigation following the death of Victoria Ariyo, a corps member who served in Abeokuta South.
Ms Ariyo died following an alleged botched abortion after an affair with her local government inspector (LGI), Olalekan Abass.
NYSC, in a statement Saturday by its spokesperson, Caroline Embu, described the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing to the nation.
It also said it was cooperating fully with security agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death in Abeokuta South Local Government of Ogun State, as investigations continued actively by authorities.
Ms Embu said the staff member allegedly linked to the incident had been taken into custody while investigations by relevant authorities were ongoing and progressing steadily without interference from any quarters whatsoever.
“The management of the NYSC is deeply saddened by the loss of a corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, under circumstances currently being investigated by authorities and stakeholders concerned nationwide.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for the peaceful repose of her soul, asking for strength and comfort in this difficult period,” Ms Embu said.
She said the scheme maintained a strict code of conduct for both staff and corps members and would not tolerate any form of misconduct or abuse of office.
“We assure the public that we are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities to ensure the truth is established and that justice is served without fear or favour at all times,” Ms Embu said.
The NYSC urged the public to avoid speculation and allow due process to take its course, reiterating that the welfare, safety, and dignity of corps members remain top priorities.
