Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has signed an executive order imposing a curfew on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, restricting their operations between 10:30 p.m and 5:30 a.m across the state.

Mr Makinde, in a broadcast on Friday, said the decision was made as an additional measure to enhance security across the state.

“With the signing of this executive order, we are also introducing an additional measure to enhance security across Oyo state. Consequently, the operation of commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as okada riders, will now be restricted between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. throughout Oyo state,” the governor said.

He stated that the safe return of the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of the state remained his administration’s top priority.

According to the governor, his administration has not forgotten and will not abandon the victims of the recent school abduction. 

Mr Makinde disclosed that work remained ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the affected victims, adding that the state government’s silence should not be misinterpreted as inaction.

He said, “We will not relent until our teachers and children are returned safely home. Every day they remain in captivity is a painful day for their families, their communities and all of us in Oyo state.

“I want to assure our people that efforts are ongoing round the clock. The safe return of those affected remains the top priority of this administration. They have not been forgotten, and they have not been abandoned.”

He stated that a great deal of work was being done behind the scenes, noting that his administration had continued to work with relevant security agencies to ensure the victims’ rescue.

The governor enjoined residents of the state to comply with all laws and regulations, stressing that “security is a shared responsibility.”

He urged residents to use the state’s emergency contact line to communicate observations and concerns directly to the state government.
