Police lied; hoodlums attacked Aregbesola, forcing escort to shoot: Civil Defence

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has contradicted the Nigeria Police Force’s claim that Interior minister Rauf Aregbesola’s security escort recklessly fired gunshots to terrorise Osun residents.
The civil defence commadant in Osun, Emmanuel Ocheja, through a statement by the command’s spokesman, Atanda Olabisi, claimed that unknown hoodlums attacked the convoy of the former Osun governor at about 6:40 p.m. around Old Garage area in Osogbo.
He added that the security details of the minister were able to disperse the hoodlums and restore normalcy to the area.
The commandant assured Osun residents of adequate security amidst the mayhem caused by the shooting in Osogbo, on Monday.
Earlier, the police command in Osun had accused Mr Aregbesola’s security escort of terrorising Osun residents with sporadic gunshots.
The spokeswoman for the police, SP Yemisi Opalola, in a statement on Monday in Osogbo, said the minister’s escort shot into the air without provocation, causing people to run for their lives.
“Today, Monday, at about 5:40 p.m , the Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola was moving in convoy of personnel of NSCDC, Correctional Service, Immigration, as well as some unidentified armed people, suspected to be political thugs along Orisumbare/MFS Road, Osogbo,” said the police statement.
