The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Shetima Mohammed, has cautioned politicians and their supporters against violence and other acts capable of disrupting public peace ahead of party primaries.

Mr Mohammed gave the warning while addressing journalists on behalf of security agencies in the state at the end of a security meeting on Tuesday in Lafia.

He said that while elections and political activities remained the cornerstone of democracy, they must be conducted in an atmosphere of peace, mutual respect and strict adherence to the rule of law.

The commissioner urged political actors across parties to avoid inflammatory statements and actions that could incite violence or threaten the stability of communities.

He said, “Political ambition must never outweigh the sanctity of human life or the stability of our communities.”

Mr Mohammed also called on political leaders to take responsibility for the conduct of their supporters, warning against violent protests, unlawful rallies, thuggery and other activities capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.

He stressed that security agencies would not tolerate any form of politically motivated violence in the state.

“Any individual or group found instigating, sponsoring or participating in such acts will be identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, regardless of status or political affiliation,” he said.

He further cautioned politicians against hate speech, campaigns of calumny and the spread of false information aimed at discrediting opponents or inflaming public sentiments.

Mr Mohammed advised political parties to ensure that activities were conducted within the ambit of the law by obtaining necessary approvals for rallies and respecting the rights of others to campaign freely without intimidation or harassment.

He also appealed to youths in the state to resist attempts by unscrupulous individuals to use them as instruments of violence.

“Your future is far more valuable than any temporary gain. Choose peace, uphold the law and serve as ambassadors of responsible civic engagement,” he said.

The police commissioner assured residents that security agencies remained united, vigilant and fully prepared to provide a safe and secure environment for all.

He reiterated the commitment of the agencies to ensure a level playing field for political parties while taking decisive action against threats to peace and security.

Mr Mohammed stressed that peace was a collective responsibility and called on politicians, supporters and community leaders to work together to sustain harmony in the state.
