International human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has said President Bola Tinubu’s government of failed to respect human rights and rule of law in its three years in office.

“Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu’s administration has failed to ensure respect for human rights and the rule of law over three years in office,” said the rights organisation in a statement on Saturday.

Citing human rights abuse under Mr Tinubu, the organisation alleged right to peaceful protest was continually undermined violently.

It also decried killings and kidnappings in Zamfara, Kwara, Plateau and other states, adding that 323 people were killed in February 2026 alone.

“Three years since President Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, journalists have been repeatedly arrested, attacked and harassed. Police and DSS continue to weaponise the notorious Cybercrime Act to gag journalists.

“Lagos, FCT and Enugu states continue to carry out mass violent forced evictions, without regard to due process and International standards. Violent attacks by gunmen continue in Zamfara, Plateau, Kwara, Niger, Benue, Sokoto and Kebbi,” it added.

The organisation noted that the police killed at least 24 people during the nationwide #Endbadgovernance protests, noting that over 1,200 people, including minors, were unlawfully detained.

It further lamented the hardship following the fuel subsidy removal, alleging that rampant corruption was escalating inequality and perpetuating Nigeria’s stunning level of poverty and deprivation under the Tinubu government. 

It said, “Removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023 triggered unprecedented cost of living that plunged millions of Nigerians into abject poverty. Those who protested high cost of food in Niger and Kano states were arrested by the police.”

The organisation decried the abduction of schoolchildren in Borno and Oyo states, accusing the Tinubu-led government of failure to protect lives and property. 

Presidential spokespersons Sunday Dare and Bayo Onanuga could not be reached immediately for comment as calls and messages sent to their mobiles were unanswered as of the time this report was filed.
