The Asagba of Asaba in Delta, Epiphany Azinge, has cautioned traditional institutions in the community against engaging in partisan politics, stressing the need to remain neutral and focus on preserving cultural values.

Mr Azinge issued the warning on Thursday in Asaba while hosting members of the outgoing executive arm of the Asaba Traditional Government, known as Otu-Ihaza, whose tenure ends in August.

He emphasised that traditional institutions within the Asaba structure must steer clear of partisan politics.

The traditional ruler noted that while individuals within the traditional system are free to participate in politics in their personal capacity, traditional bodies, chiefs and age-grade groups must not be used as political platforms.

He stated, “Individually, you can participate, but as an umbrella institution, you cannot. Collective traditional structures must remain above political interests.”

Mr Azinge commended the outgoing team for its decade of service, describing the council as a vital institution established to implement decisions of the Asagba Executive Council and uphold the customs and traditions of the Asaba people.

He praised the group for its commitment, transparency and dedication, noting that its members had contributed significantly to the growth and development of the community.

The traditional ruler urged the outgoing officials to continue to offer their experience and knowledge to the community, adding that their years of service had equipped them with valuable wisdom.

He also called for proper documentation of the achievements of the outgoing Otu-Ihaza to serve as a reference for future administrations.

Mr Azinge encouraged the incoming team to embrace digital tools and maintain close ties with their predecessors to benefit from their experience.

Earlier, the outgoing Onoi of Asaba, Uche Nwajei, thanked the Asagba for his support and guidance throughout their tenure.

Mr Nwajei said the Otu-Ihaza faced several challenges but remained committed to serving the community with fairness and integrity.

He commended members of his team for their cooperation and paid tribute to those who died in the course of service.
