The democrats led U.S. Senate is determined to push forward with the bid to put paid to any political resurgence plans of immediate past president, Donald Trump.

Majority leader Chuck Schumer announced Friday that impeachment trial of Mr. Trump will commence next week once the House of Representatives delivers impeachment papers to the Senate.

The House of Representatives had, just before Mr. Trump’s exit from office, impeached him for for inviting insurrection against the American government.

The controversial ex-president is being tried for inciting the January 6 Capitol riot following his refusal to concede defeat to Joe Biden who was declared the winner of the Presidential election held in November 2020.

Mr. Schumer revealed that the House would deliver the impeachment trial to the Senate on Monday, clearing paths for the Senate to begin trial on Tuesday.

“The Senate will conduct a trial of the impeachment of Donald Trump. It will be a full trial. It will be a fair trial,” Mr. Schumer said.

The trial makes Mr. Trump the first American President to be tried after leaving office.

Mr. Trump had on January 6, 2021, addressed supporters to peacefully kick against the outcome of the U.S. presidential  election result, charging them to “fight like hell” as they marched towards the U.S. Capitol building.

The protest, however, turned ugly after the mob broke their way into the congress building in an attempt to disrupt the certification process of Mr. Biden’s election victory by lawmakers.

Four protesters and a Capitol police officer died in the mayhem.

Mr. Trump was later impeached by the U.S. House of Reps after the protest, making him the first President in the history of the country to be impeached twice.

If found guilty, Mr. Trump will be barred from contesting for elective position in the future.
