President Muhammadu Buhari will not be holding a nationwide broadcast on October 1.

The president would instead address the country from Eagle Square in Abuja, the presidency said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

“Please note that in view of the open-air live address, the traditional early morning October 1 Presidential Broadcast will not feature on Thursday,” the statement, signed by spokesman Femi Adesina, said.

The live address will commence after the anniversary parade beginning at 10am which will be covered by major television and radio stations especially the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Mr. Adesina said.

Nigeria will celebrate 60 years since it achieved independence from the British on October 1. The presidential address is widely seen as a key highlight of the day, but several protests, including those organised worldwide, have been planned for the same day.
