Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday fulfilled promise made to Chioma, Ajunwa, an Olympics gold medallist, in the 1990’s.

In 1996, Chioma Ajunwa was promised a house in Lagos for winning a gold medal in the Atlanta Olympics.

Former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, made the promise but failed to fulfill the promise at that time.

Mr Sanwo-Olu however handed over the key to a three-bedroom flat in Iponri, Lagos, to Ms Ajuma as a reward to the Olympics gold medallist.

“Today she will be the owner of a three bedroom flat at the famous Babatunde Raji Fashola housing estate, Iponri,” said Mr Sanwo-Olu.

He added, “It can be seen that indeed it could have taken 25 years to fulfill the promise today but it is a promise that is deserving.”

Ms Ajunwa is an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in the Nigeria Police Force.

She was once a professional athlete both in track and field events, field and track and a member of the Nigerian women football during the Women’s World Cup in 1991.

Ms Ajunwa is the first black African woman to win an Olympics gold medal in a track event.
